Making their return appearance in this year's first two-parter, the Sontarans have forced their way up the chart of returning foes so that only the Daleks, the Cybermen and the Master have faced the Doctor more often.
Their exploits in the classic series have just been released in the box set Bred for War.
But which one is their best ever story, in your humble opinion? |

| The time warrior was ok but not great. The Invasion of time didnt make sense and the Two Doctors was great.... except for the 2 sontarens. |

I don't honestly remember 'Invasion of Time' enough to say, and, uh... I didn't really like the New Series two-parter.
My favourite of these stories is 'Two Doctors', but, since it's arguably not really a Sontaran story at all, I'm plumping for the pretty-good 'Time Warrior' instead. |

| The Sontarans have the problem that other frequent foes have - sometimes you have a Dalek story, sometimes you have a story with Daleks in it. The Invasion of Time and The Two Doctors are stories that have Sontarans in them... |

| The Time Warrior for me. Great cod-Shakespearean dialogue from Robert Holmes and Sarah-Jane Smith's first story, plus Kevin Lindsay as Linx as the definitive Sontaran. What more do you need!?! Honourable mentions to Experiment and the Tennant two-parter. |

| The Time Warrior is imo the best by far followed by the Sontaran Experiment. |

| The Time Warrior for me, too. I think it's just brilliant; it's been one of my fave Pertwee stories since I was a kid. |

Waaaaaahhhhhh!!!!!!!!
The new Sontaran two-parter didn't feature the clasic Sontaran spaceships! Those spherical ones were great, and suited the Sontarans in my opinion. The new type looked great, but two hundred 'Sontaran-Spheres' would have been better!!
Arg, I really hate Sontaran Strategem/Poison Sky!!
How could they turn these warriors into a joke?!?!?! I mena, there goes their reputation amongst viewers. And the Sontar-Ha was about the most ridiculous thing in Doctor Who in the whole 2008 season!!
Poor Sontarans.
I really liked the Two Doctors. It's great to watch. The story defintely doesn't centre around the Sontarans, but they are great in it. It really works, and I liked the Sontaran gun, and they had their classic ship, and the Sontaran dialogue was good. As for the other Sontaran ones, well, they're not among my favourites. |

Hmmm... Can the Two Doctors really be counted as a Sontaran story? Can the Curse of Peladon be fairly counted as an Ice Warriors story?
Monsters and Villains (the book) counted them but... I don't think people, such as myslef, can favour the Two Doctors for the Sontarans. So perhaps in voting for that serial, I'm voting because of the story, not the Sontarans in it. |

| I've gotta say the 2 doctors had the least convincing Sontarens ever. And it was anoying they were always talking about their great army but there was only two of them. |

Well, the sad thingh is that returning enemies often become generic later in their existence. There are numerous stories featuring Daleks, Cybermen and the Master where you could safely replace the featured foe with something else and not really notice. Infamously, Day of the Daleks was originally written with just humans from the future as the enemy, and the Daleks were added in to spice it up.
Of course, both The Invasion of Time and The Two Doctors have the Sontatrans playing a minor role. It may even be that Field Major Styre got more screen time in The Time Warrior than the two floppy-headed Sontarans in The Two Doctors... |

Interesting piece of trivia; I'll have to read the book again and blank the Daleks out to see if it improves... |

Yeah, I agree. I think that's the case with The Sontaran Strategem/ The Poison Sky. I think the Sontarans recieved yet another dissapointing return, and could easily have been a different, military race.
I didn't really have a problem with the Sontarans in The Two Doctors, although I realise that they really didn't get the role they deserved. It just doesn't seem right to have major enemies playing such a small part.
But what's done is done, and it's the new series that provides the worries. In my opinion, the NuWho return of the Sontarans and the Cybermen were dissappointing. The Cyberman failure was the worst, because I hate to see my fave Who enemies reduced to that. And then the Sontaran stupidity... well, I could go on and on about why I can't stand there recent two-parter... The good news is that Moffat said he would only return popular Who baddies if there was a really good story (I think I read that in a DE). Good news for us, not for Helen Raynor (hehe).
Anyway, I think The Two Doctors is a unique case, because despite the Sontaran failings, it really was an excellent serial (one of my faves ).
What I really hope happens, and isn't a disaster, is the glorious, Moffat-written return of the Ice Warriors. I think they've fared worse than the Sontarans. |

Really, why Sontarans? They seem to be the worst consistently re-occuring enemy in DW history!
In the end, I plumped for Invasion of Time because I don't like any of them, so I went with the one I liked when I first saw it. |
