Tom's and Romanna's cameo were scenes from the incompleted serial "Shada" by Douglas Adams. Big Finish in conjunction with BBCi completed it with a specifcally written proluge to explain why it is Paul McGann as the Doctor, not Tom Baker. The script remains largely unchanged. It was released as both a web cast on the officail BBC Doctor Who site and as a an audio adventure by Big Finish. (The first to star Paul McGann).

The original DVD release of the 5 Doctor's has the Special Edition version which is longer and was previously only seen on video.

This release, I belive, has both the original version and the Special Edition.

I saw a post by one of the Restoration Team the other day saying they're currently working on The War Games. It's by Steve Roberts, and it's about half way down this page:

???

BBC have all 10 episodes of The War Games. They released the complete story on video. The quality isn't that great in some episodes, but that's why the BBC use the Restoration Team - to improve the quality.

I'm trying to remember if the ABC showed The War Games when they played most of the remaining original episodes all the way through a few years back. They may have skipped it because it includes a very short clip of a Dalek, and that was back before the BBC struck a deal with the Terry Nation Estate about broadcasting episodes with Daleks in them - the deal was struck to allow Daleks to appear in the new series.

The ABC did not show The War Games during the most recent repeat run for the reason you suggested.
I can remember being quite disconcerted by the jump from Pat Troughton with a coat over his head in black and white to Jon Pertwee flopping to the ground in colour!

The Big Finish audio starring Paul McGann is Storm Warning although Shada takes place before it.
