Oh yeah, considering the fact that they both had the same composer Malcolm Clarke. |

| Enlightenment is perhaps the only place where I hear the word "Ephemeral" from so to my surprise upon coming out of a film tutorial my tutor actually used that word during class. |

I don't quite know what to make of Enlightenment. It's got a very original and creative story, the production is good (especially by Doctor Who standards), but I feel it's lacking a certain X-factor that could have made it really great. I still enjoyed it, though - enough to give it a 'Good' vote.
Also loved the different birds on each Guardian's head - A dove for White and a crow for black. |

Very good.

As people have pointed out, there's no explanation why they wore the birds on their heads.
Despite the White Guardian's hint to the Doctor of another encounter with the Black Guardian, the two Guardians were never seen again in the classic series most probably because Valentine Dyall had sadly passed away in 1985 shortly after doing Slipback and Cyril Luckham had also passed in early 1989. Given the fact it has been established that the Guardians could change their appearances in any shape or form it could still allow new actors to play them in the new series. Therefore I posted the question of whether they should be in the new series in the SPOILER FREE New Series Discussion section.
I tend to find the last in the trilogy to be the least impressive but Enlightenment is most definitely an exception.
I worked out a Blake's 7 link with the three stories in the Black Guardian trilogy:
Mawdryn Undead guest starred David Collings who was in the final Blake's 7 episode Blake which was directed by Terminus director Mary
Ridge. Enlightenment is not only the third in the Black Guardian trilogy but also the third Doctor Who serial directed by former Blake's 7 director Fiona Cumming (after Castrovalva & Snakedance). Cumming would direct one more Doctor Who serial Planet of Fire.

I gave this story an "excellent" for these reasons:
-The atmosphere - mixing Edwardian yachts and outer space looked truly amazing and beautiful. Great special effects work there
-The story wasn't a traditional Doctor-saves-the-world-from-bad-aliens, though if Captain Wrack or another Eternal had received Enlightenment then there could have been drastic effects. Having said that, stories like this should only be occasional, as the whole idea of the show is for the Doctor to save the world from aliens
-The Eternals - a very interesting form of being
-Captain Wrack (and doesn't that name just hit the spot!) - does a great job as the main villain. Good to see some gender equality in there
-Marriner, and his relationship with Tegan - I am now a Marriner/Tegan shipper. Yes, he'll live forever and doesn't have any feelings, but I found it so sweet the way he said, "I've never met an Ephemeral like you before". Awwww!
-Tegan's dress - so beautiful!
I recently made a fanvid for this story that I'm quite proud of. It's to "Forever Young" as sung by Youth Group:

It's a great story, yeah.

Hahaa, I had NEVER thought I'd see a Marriner/Tegan shipper (note the pun, too!). Probably because I've always seen Marriner as creepy, the kind of guy who drugs a girl and has his way with them (effectively, that is what he does). And yet... as you say, he sounds like he's genuinely discovered what emotion is at the end of the story, as if Tegan's fiery, passionate personality (which is very Australian ) awoke something in him.
Surprised you didn't mention the wonderful way that Turlough's ongoing storyline is resolved (episode 2's cliffhanger is amazing)... but then, have you seen 'Mawdryn Undead'? If not, then it mightn't hit you as powerfully.
(Great vid by the way, even though I don't like the song ) |

Actually I have seen Mawdryn Undead as well as Terminus, and I did like how Turlough's situation was resolved. It just wasn't a defining element for me in how good the story was.
And thanks for watching the vid |
