R.I.P Richard Briers

Veteran actor and British treasure Richard Briers has passed away, aged 79, after recently revealing he had been battling a serious lung condition. According to his agent, Briers died peacefully on Sunday night at home.

Briers enjoyed a long and varied career on stage, television and film. He was the star of numerous sitcoms, Shakespearian adaptations and iconic British dramas. Of course this included a role in Doctor Who, where Briers portrayed the Chief Caretaker in the 1987 serial Paradise Towers.

He returned to the Whoniverse in 2008, when he played billionaire alien artefact collector Henry Parker in the Torchwood episode A Day in the Death.

Briers will be commemorated at this weekend's Whovention with a tribute to be played to him in the media room.

Our thoughts are with his wife Ann Davies, who also starred in Doctor Who as Jenny in The Dalek Invasion of Earth, and his two daughters.
